Why is Open Enrollment important?
Medicare Open Enrollment is from October 15 to December 7 every year. During Medicare Open Enrollment, people with Medicare can compare their Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans or change plans. People who missed the standard deadline to sign up for a Part D plan can sign up during Medicare Open Enrollment.
If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you can also make changes during a different time, called Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment. From January 1 – March 31 each year, you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or Original Medicare with a Part D drug plan. You can only change plans once during Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment. You are only eligible for Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment if you already have a Medicare Advantage plan.
These are not the only important dates and deadlines for Medicare. There are many different dates and deadlines. In some situations, you might be able to enroll or make changes outside of Medicare Open Enrollment. A trained Missouri SHIP counselor can give personalized answers to your Medicare questions.
